Toyota Motor Corp. took the wraps off a concept of its upcoming new entry-level car yesterday at the Auto Expo in New Delhi, India. A production version will be launched in India late this year.
The Etios will be built by Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt., which is 89% owned by Toyota and the remainder by India’s Kirloskar group, at the venture’s upcoming second plant near Bangalore. Some 2,000 engineers, led by Yoshinori Noritake, worked on the project over the last four years.
Based on an all-new platform, the Etios will be available in sedan and hatchback variants. Both are on display in Delhi. The lower-volume sedan will be launched first to help work out any quality issues before the hatchback is introduced early next year.
The vehicle is expected to be base-priced at about $10,500. To help control costs, the car has a relatively Spartan interior with base-level seats, limited sound-proofing and a single central windshield wiper. But Toyota insists the Etios will have better quality and more space than key competitors such as the Maruti Swift.
Buyers will have a choice of 1.2- or 1.5-liter DOHC engines. Plans to offer a diesel engine have been scuttled, according to media reports.
Toyota plans to sell 70,000 of the cars during its first year on the market. In addition to India, the Etios will be exported to Russia and other emerging markets. Local production in Brazil is due to start in 2011.
Toyota began making cars in India 10 years ago, but production has grown slowly. The company built just 51,000 cars in the country last year. To help grow sales, Toyota plans to expand its dealer network in India from 97 today to 150 by the end of this year.
